Report: Community health programs would reduce costs

Building a stronger public health system in the United States was the agenda today for the Trust America’s Health report that came out today. In the report recommends investment in more nutrition for America’s children. According to the report this would cost a total of $16 billion over a period of five years. (more…)

Attorney General: Enemy combatants have constitutional right to challenge their detention

Attorney General Michael Mukasey speaking at the American Enterprise Institute [AEI] today called on Congress to act on detainees at Guantanamo Bay possibly trying to usurp the court system. Under the rules of habeas corpus, the 270 detainees at Guantanamo Bay have a constitutional right to challenge their detentions. The overriding issue facing the judicial system at the moment is when they are allowed to pursue legal action under habeas corpus. Mukasey called on Congress to draft legislation that would “act to resolve these difficult questions that have been left unanswered.” (more…)

McCain has taken his eye off the ball

At the Democratic National Committee today, Congressmen Adam Smith (D-WA) and Chet Edwards (D-Texas) offered a rebuttal to the Republican press conference against presidential hopeful Barack Obama. Smith and Edwards said that like President Bush, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has been inconsistent in his positions and wrong in his judgments on Iraq from the beginning which has harmed America’s security. (more…)

Report: Most American’s doing better than fifty years ago

Today in a House press conference authors Sarah Burd-Sharps and Kristen Lewis of the report “The Measure of America, American Human Development Report 2008-2009” explained their findings. The findings of the research were compiled from government documents that were available for the last two years, including the census and current economic reports. All of the findings were compiled to give the country “a very holistic approach that puts the person at the front and center,” said Burd-Sharps. (more…)
