The Washington Bureau will cover a full committee hearing on the “Imperial Presidency of George Bush” for possible Bush administration misconduct or abuses. A briefing on wind energy and changing America’s electricity supply will be covered by TRNS. The Washington Bureau will cover a discussion with former Iraqi Prime Minister and current member of Parliament Ayad Allawi on the political situation in Iraq. In light of the recent rescue of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)-held hostages, TRNS will cover a news conference on how the Colombian government is regaining control of its national territory. Conference calls highlighting Senator John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) position on the Community Choice Act and disability rights as well as Republican Representative Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan’s comments on Senator Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) European expedition will be covered.

Today, the Washington Bureau will cover President Bush’s remarks on the Freedom Agenda. In the House of Representatives, TRNS will cover “Saving the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) and the Nonproliferation Regime in an Era of Nuclear Renaissance” in addition to a hearing discussing the 2004 presidential election by Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties Subcommittee. TRNS will also cover a hearing on small market drugs, questioning whether drug companies are financially exploiting those with rare diseases.

In the Senate, the Senate Judiciary Committee will discuss federal and state responses to polygamy, a hearing in which Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and US attorneys from Nevada and Utah will testify. A hearing aimed at improving federal program management will be covered, as will a Finance Committee on highway publi-private partnerships and their tax and financial aspects. A conference call examining the presidential preference of 2,015 Hispanic voters will be covered.

Chief Pentagon Correspondent Meredith MacKenzie will attend a press briefing at the Pentagon. White House Correspondent Lovisa Frost will cover a White House gaggle and briefing.

The Washington Bureau will cover the House Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee hearing on deploying the strategic oil reserve, the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on an extended UN mandate for Iraq, and the House Armed Services Committee hearings on progress in Iraq and “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” The Bureau will also attend the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee hearing on existing federal programs reducing gasoline demand and the Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on waste, fraud, and abuse in Defense Department Contracts.

Staff will also go to a ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary of President Truman’s executive order to integrate the U.S. Armed Forces, a program calling for action to prevent cancer and increase survivorship with Lance Armstrong, and a pen-and-pad with Charles Schumer (D-NY) on the 2008 Congressional elections.

UN Correspondent Dan Patterson will follow events on Sudan at the UN and attend PodCamp Boston tomorrow.

The Washington Bureau will cover think tank discussions on using humanity as a war weapon, NATO militaries, and domestic violence programs. The Bureau will also attend a Congressional study group briefing on disease prevention and a Congressional defense and foreign policy forum with the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton. Staff will also cover a summit on coordinating inter-jurisdictional responses in the Washington, D.C. area with Attorney General Michael Mukasey.

Today off the Hill, the White House Gaggle will be covered by Correspondent Lovisa Frost. Remarks at the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute will also be reported. A conference call discussing Rep. Bob Latta’s (R-Ohio) attendance on the American Energy Tour with House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will be reviewed. The Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on the legal foundations of fighting terrorism will be attended, as will remarks by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) concerning trade with China.

A news conference introducing a new economic agenda with, among others, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Rep. Christopher van Hollen (D-Md.) will be covered, as will a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on childhood obesity. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on global nuclear detection and the Senate Special Committee on Aging will hold a hearing on the status of retirement savings.

On the House side of the Hill, staff will attend a session of the Small Business Committee in which prosthetics for veterans will be discussed. Staff will also take part in a Homeland Security Committee hearing on the implementation of biosurveillance requirements of the 9/11 Act. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke will testify before the Financial Services Committee in a hearing on monetary policy.

Today, the Washington Bureau will cover a presentation by US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright at the Organziation of American States. A news conference held by former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will announce the launch of the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship’s Student Congress, a program that will allow undergraduate students to take masters-level classes in diplomacy. An event held by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to discuss what Democrats have done to strengthen the economy will also be covered.

In the afternoon, staff will cover an address at the Center for American Progress on US leadership in renewable energy. The American Association for the Advancement of Science’s discussion on the impacts of nuclear war will be attended on Capitol Hill. Staff members will go to an analysis of population control held by the Heritage Foundation. Lastly, the Center for Strategic and International Studies will hold a discussion of the Shiite revival in Iraq.
